How did you become involved with United Way?

I got involved with United Way many years ago because of Hugh Greene, Baptist Health President and CEO, and his commitment and passion for the mission of this organization.  I had the opportunity to tour several agencies and was immediately struck by how much need there was and the dedication of the staff.  I knew I wanted to become a volunteer and make a difference! I have been volunteering and giving to United Way for nearly 30 years.

What was your motivation in making your Legacy Gift commitment?

When I was approached about a Legacy gift, I knew immediately this was something I wanted to do. I firmly believe in United Way’s mission, and I want to do my part to ensure the organization will be here forever to serve the needs of the community and improve the quality of life.

Top of my list includes improving public education, access to health care including mental health, and affordable housing.

Shrinking dollars from governmental agencies and other sources create an imperative for a legacy gift and endowment program. We simply cannot rely on these traditional sources to fund the future needs of our community.

While the specific needs of our community might change over time, there will always be needs. My decision to participate was simple — I want to make a difference and support this community through the mission of United Way years after I am no longer here.

Why would you suggest others a commitment to United Way?

For the same reasons I made a commitment – if you love this community and believe in United Way’s mission, make a commitment to ensure it will be here long after we are not!
